Siamese cat with roses and fan
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A cat with a pale pink crest and pearl necklace is the central subject, surrounded by red roses with dark shading, leaves and a fan with a small rose. A banner lettered with partly visible words sits across the bottom. Bold outlines, saturated pinks, reds and blues, and smooth shading give the piece a neo-traditional look.

The cat came out on the supply boat in a hatbox, which tells you most of what you need to know about her. Mrs Ottoline Pell had paid the purser two shillings to carry her across from Wells, and when the lid came off on the landing she stepped out, shook one blue-grey paw, and looked up at the lamp room as though it had been put together carelessly.

She wore pearls at all times, a double strand fastened with a clasp the colour of a cherry drop, and a pale plume above her ears that the men said was a hat she had forgotten to take off. My wife called it a crest. Nobody on the rock argued with either of them for long.
Every evening at dusk she took a painted fan from the sill, paper printed with red roses and one small rose stitched into a fold, and opened it slowly towards the water. The Hendry boys swore the fleet steered by it. I took it for vanity, until the autumn the fog sat on us for three nights and the lamp mechanism seized on the second.
On the third night I climbed the gallery with a torch that had nothing left in it and found her on the rail, fanning at the grey as if she could shift it. Out past the reef a light showed, then another, low and wavering, following the pale bob of her crest against the glass. They came in on her, one boat after another, and not a single hull was lost.
