Colour tattoo of a dark profile silhouette in an ornate oval frame, with a blue carriage, pink bow and script above, on a forearm.

Silhouette cameo and carriage on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A dark profile silhouette sits inside an ornate oval frame with a jewel at its base, and a pink bow hangs from the bottom with dotted lines running down. A blue carriage sits at the top of the frame, and the script reads 'once upon a dream' in black lettering above it. The frame and carriage use bold outlines with light shading, while the silhouette is solid black and the bow is pink.

Dear Marguerite,

The road past Hollin Cross closed on Tuesday and the coach you promised never came, so I am writing at the kitchen table with the cold coming through the shutters and Mrs Pargeter snoring by the range. You will say I always write when I am cross. I am, a little. Frost has furred the inside of the window, and this morning I scratched a clear patch with my thumbnail and watched the lamps of the Dunmere mail blink out on the hill, two yellow sparks going the wrong way.

The pink silk you left behind is still in the drawer of the blue chest. I finally stitched it to the back of the little oval mirror in the upstairs passage, the one with the chipped gilt frame, and tied a bow where the cord meets the wall. Mr Ashby from the mill stopped on the stair yesterday and asked who had been so careless as to leave a ribbon on the glass. I told him it was only the mirror, and that it had waited a long time for someone to look properly.

The snow has buried the sign post, so nobody will come up from the village tonight. We have bread, two hams and a barrel of the dark ale. I have been reading the old ledger of guests going back to my grandmother's time, and nearly every name has a carriage drawn beside it in the margin, as if each of them meant to leave in the morning. Some did. The mirror remembers which.

Come when the road opens. I will keep a candle burning in the passage, and the glass will be facing the door, so you will see yourself in it before you see me.

Your sister, Hester
