Silhouette figure tattoo on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bare lower leg in lace platform heels stands on a pavement at night, with the background mostly dark. A small solid black silhouette of a figure, with a thin trailing line, sits on the side of the calf near the ankle. The tattoo is a single flat dark tone with no shading, and the image is lit by street light.

The lamp was the only thing that mattered that August, Dad said, because the moths came to it and the bats ate the moths, and the bats kept the greenhouse glass clear of slugs. I was nine and didn't believe any of it. I only knew that Mrs Ferriby had strung a bulb on the wall of the old potting shed, and that on warm nights she danced in front of it on the lawn between the rows of runner beans.

Her shadow went up the brick and kept going, longer than she was, with a ribbon of something trailing behind it like the wake of a boat. My job was to hold the hose and not water her. Dad said she was practising for a company in Leeds that had turned her down twice. She laughed and said the company could come and look at the wall if they wanted a dancer, because nobody had ever cut a shape so clean.
One night the bulb blew with a small pop and the garden went dark. We stood still and waited for the moon to be useful. Then Mrs Ferriby picked up the torch from the bench and held it low, and there she was again on the wall, a single black figure caught mid-leap, the ribbon still streaming from one wrist as if the air had not yet agreed to let it fall.
She left the cottage in October. The wall still has a faint dark mark where the shadow was caught, and I have never painted over it. Dad says it's the damp. I know better. Some shapes stay put once they have been seen properly.
