Forty years at the bench in Margate had taught her that a shoe with a story always came in on a Tuesday.

The leather was cheap, but the colours were bright as a fishmonger's tray: tangerine, teal, a pink that had no business on a weekday. She stitched the split with waxed thread and thought of smoke, grey and feathered, curling up off the pier on the night the lifeboat came in empty.

She finished at closing, buffed the heels until the orange caught the streetlamp, and left the pair on the counter with a paper tag. The lad came back on Friday. He didn't ask what she charged. He asked whether the stitching would hold on wet sand, and she told him it would, provided he never once rang the number in the lining.
