The stranger who came in on Wednesday calls herself Ruth Ashby. She arrived with snow to her knees and asked for a room away from the road, paying in coins she had counted twice. Yesterday I found her on the bottom step with a fine steel pen, inking a small cross on the inside of her wrist, the lines thin as a hair. When she saw me watching she didn't hide it. She closed her fingers into a fist, held it up to the lamp, and said, "Keep that to yourself, Nell, and I'll keep your coal honest." I didn't ask what it meant.

This morning the wind dropped and the road showed itself under the drifts. Ruth's room was empty, the bed made square as a sergeant's. The coins were stacked on the sill with a note beneath them, two words in a neat hand: Thank you. On the frosted glass someone had drawn a cross with a fingertip, so faint that the sun coming through could barely find it.
