Nobody in Hollen Cove had ever seen Mab Carrow stop spinning. She sat on the bench outside the boarding house with a drop spindle and a basket of grey fleece, and the thread came off her fingers finer than hair. It ran from her lap, down the steps, across the cobbles and over the harbour wall, where it went under the water and came up again somewhere out past the breakwater. The fishermen said it was how the boats found their way in when the sea fog came down thick as wool.

Her mother had started it. Her mother had said that a single thread, unbroken, would keep a man from walking off the edge of the world. Mab did not believe the world had edges, but she believed in the knot, and in the way the thread pulled slightly when a boat came home, like a child tugging at a sleeve.
One October the fog stayed three weeks. Mab's hands cramped. The lodgers brought her tea and then stopped asking how she was. On the twentieth night she felt the thread go slack, and she knew the last boat, the Lark, was lost somewhere between the rocks and the bell buoy.
She did not stop to think. She tied the end of her own hair ribbon to the yarn, drew a breath, and walked down the steps with the spindle still turning in her fist, paying out her own length into the grey and calling the Lark's crew by name until the water took her voice. At dawn the Lark came in on the tide. The whole village found Mab asleep on the quay, one hand still closed around a broken end of thread, a single line of wet yarn running from her fingers into the harbour.
