Single-lens camera tattoo on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline drawing of a vintage single-lens reflex camera, shown from a three-quarter angle with the lens facing towards the lower right. The linework is thin and even, with light hatching and grey shading on the dark camera body and a clean, unfilled lens barrel. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin, framed by a blue and white checked shirt collar.

Mrs Pardoe had the darkroom set up in the coal cellar before the second post came, and by the time the gulls were fighting over the bins Edith had decided it was the only thing in Scarborough worth paying rent for. The camera belonged to the lodger in number four, a man who left before breakfast and came back smelling of salt and fixer. He had lent it to her on Tuesday with the look of someone who did not expect it back in one piece.

She had never held a single-lens reflex before. The mirror slapped up when she pressed the shutter, and the whole street jumped in the little window of the viewfinder, upside down and then the right way up again. She shot the pier, two boys with a crab on a string, the sign for the Cosy Corner with three letters missing. Nothing she framed was ever quite where she had meant it to be.

On Friday she went down the cellar steps in the dark with the spool, her fingers numb from the cold. The film came out wet and curled like a fern. Holding a strip to the bulb, she saw the pier, faint and reversed, and then a face she didn't recognise at the edge of the frame, squinting back at her through the lens.

She hung the strips on the airing line between the sheets and waited for him to come home. When the door went at six, she didn't say a word. She just held up the negatives and let him find himself looking back.
