Vintage rangefinder camera tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed tattoo of a vintage rangefinder camera with a large front lens, a viewfinder window and the word Nikon printed on the top plate. The shading uses smooth black and grey tones to give the metal body, leather-look panels and lens rings depth and a realistic finish. The camera fills the frame on the forearm, with the arm and a grey top softly out of focus behind it.

The rain had been coming down on Chapel Street market since six, and by eleven the stallholders had given up pretending it would stop. I stood under the awning of Mrs Okafor's fabric stall with my back against a roll of oilcloth and watched the gutters run. My father's camera hung from my neck on its worn strap, the one with the stubborn advance lever, and I kept thinking about the day he taught me to hold it still, elbows tucked in, breathing out before the shutter.

He never let me touch the lens ring. He said the glass was older than both of us and had seen things worth more than my fingerprints. So when the lad from the frame shop asked if I wanted the old Nikon fixed up, I told him no, but I wanted a copy of the picture I took of Dad at the harbour, the one where he squints into the sun and laughs at something out of frame. He took the print from the drawer, glanced at it, and said it was a shame the light had been so bad.

I walked home with the print tucked inside my jacket, dry against my ribs. At the corner by the bakery the rain eased for a moment and a single bus went past, its windows lit gold, and in the reflection on its side I saw the old camera again, the black body and chrome top plate catching the streetlamp, the lens looking back at me the way it always had, patient and unhurried, as if it already knew the next frame would be the one that mattered.
