Black and grey photograph of a small fine line tattoo of an SLR camera with a heart in the lens, on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Camera tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a single lens reflex camera, with the word PENTAX on the prism and a solid heart in the lens ring. The linework is thin and even, and the design is filled only with solid black ink, with no shading. The photograph is black and white and shows the forearm at a shallow angle, with the tattoo sitting in the centre of the frame against a blurred light background.

Dear Morag,

The camera turned up in the nettles below the north wall of Carrick Hollin, where the stair climbs to nothing. Dad's old Pentax, the strap gone soft as bread and the lens cap still on. I'd have left it for the crows, but the heart in the lens ring caught the light and I couldn't. Someone put that heart there on purpose. Nobody makes a lens with a heart unless they mean it.

I've finished the spool. Twelve frames, though the advance lever stuck after the seventh, so the last five are doubled up like ghosts who couldn't agree. I took the chapel window, the sheep, the hawthorn growing out of the garderobe. I took Edwin from the village shop, who sulked for a whole minute before he let me. Frame nine is a slant of grey sky with a gull cut in half at the edge. I think it's the best one.

The chemist in Keswick had the negatives back on Thursday. Frame one is the chapel window, the one I took at dawn, and in the arch there's a figure holding something square to its face. I've been over it with a loupe and it isn't Edwin, and it isn't me, because I was on the far side of the nave with my back to the glass. I'm not going back up there to find out. I've put the negative against the kitchen window, and the heart in the lens is still sharp in the light.

Tell Mum the camera was lost property and the keeper signed for it. She'll believe that more than the truth.

Love, Jean
