Rolling pin and whisk on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's inner forearm and wrist show a black linework tattoo of a rolling pin placed above a whisk, both drawn as simple outlines. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the design sits centrally on the arm against a plain white background. Only the lower part of her face is visible at the top of the frame, with a white top and layered necklace in the lower right.

The proving cabinet hummed its wrong note again, and Mara did not look up from the dough. 'Knuckles, not fingertips,' she said. 'The fingertips are for the panel. The knuckles are for the bread.' Idris, who had been on the Corvane Ring for eleven days and still flinched at the hatch seals, pressed his hands into the flour the way she had shown him and felt it give.

The galley had been built for printing. Every loaf on Corvane came off the feeder as a grey, fibrous slab that tasted of nothing but the nutrient ledger. Mara had kept her grandmother's tools in a locked drawer under the sink for thirty years, though no inspector had ever caught her using them. The rolling pin was a length of ash, worn pale at the middle. The whisk had a handle of some dark wood nobody on the ring could name, and its wires still bent at the angle they had been forged to.
On the twelfth night the feeder failed. Mara woke him by tapping twice on the bunk frame. 'Bring the whisk,' she said. 'And wash your hands properly this time.' By morning he had beaten a bowl of cultured albumen into peaks stiff enough to stand a spoon in, and his forearm ached to the bone.
Mara tipped the bowl, watched the foam hold, and said nothing for a while. Then she laid the rolling pin across the bench beside the whisk, the two of them making a small cross of ash and wire, and told him the ring would need someone else to keep the drawer locked now.
