Single straight line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a forearm against a dark background, with one thin, straight black line running from near the elbow down towards the wrist. The line is crisp and even in width, with no shading or fill. The skin is lit softly from the centre, leaving the edges of the frame in shadow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ride is supposed to run true from the stile at Hobb's Lane down to the water meadow, and by the third morning you have stopped pretending the trees will help. Mr Pell gave you the rule, a bundle of iron pins and a ball of waxed twine, and told you to sight along the last pin and never once look at the oak. You look at the oak. Everyone does, sooner or later.

The wood smells of wet bracken and split beech. You drive a pin, draw the twine taut and walk the line with your eyes half shut, the way the blacksmith's widow taught you to walk a plank before you trust it. Where the line meets a holly you go round by the width of a hand and come back to the same mark on the far side. The twine still hums when you touch it, like a plucked string that has forgotten its tune.

On the fourth day you find Pell sitting against a fallen beech in the lower wood, the rule across his knees. He is not dead, only finished, and he tells you the ride was never going to be straight. The trees would not have it, and so the line has to be the thing that holds still while everything else bends. He makes you promise to cut it true anyway.

Years later the ride is a path on the parish map, and children walk it without knowing it was ever an argument. You still carry the rule. When the wood begins to lean again, you lay a pin, pull the twine tight and let one dark stroke run from the stile to the water, plain against the pale ground of the morning.
