A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook had counted the biscuits twice before the fox came aboard at Gravesend, trotting up the gangplank with a dead gull in its jaws as if it had bought its passage. Mrs Pennock swore at it in two languages, but the bosun wanted fresh meat for the Sunday pot, so the fox was let stay, and it stayed the whole voyage.

It took something every day. A ladle from the hook, the lid off the flour, a horn-handled knife that turned up again in the bilge. The crew blamed the cabin boy, Tobias, who was small enough to hide a fox under his coat and too honest to deny it when asked. He went a night without supper for the fox's cheek, and the fox sat on the coaming and watched him with its head to one side.

On the forty-first night Tobias caught it in the galley with a ham in its mouth and a lantern in his fist. He expected a fight. Instead the fox set down the ham, licked its whiskers, and said, in the flat voice of a man selling eels, "Tell me the one about the drowned bell, and I will give you back your supper twice over." Tobias had no such story, only the ones his grandmother told in Hull, so he told them all until the lantern guttered and the sea went quiet under the hull.

They made the Humber in the grey before dawn. When the gangplank went down, the cook found every one of her knives laid in a row on the flour sack, and beside them a single russet hair. Tobias went ashore with his pockets full of stolen biscuits and never said what the fox had been paid. On still nights after that, the cook swore she saw a thin dark line running along the rail, stopping just short of the bell.
