Sitting cat fine line tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line tattoo of a cat sitting upright with its head turned slightly and its tail curled at the base, drawn in thin dark linework. The ink is black with no shading, and the cat is set against pale skin in a warm sepia-toned photo. The composition is close and angled, with a dark bra strap and loose hair framing the top of the frame.

Nobody at Coldharbour Junction could say which way the cat had come in. It was grey, or had been grey once, and every morning it sat on the end of the down platform bench with its tail wrapped round its feet as if it had paid for the seat. The stationmaster, Mr Pell, tried to shoo it with a broom twice. The second time it looked at him over one shoulder, then went back to watching the rails, so he gave up and started leaving a saucer of milk beside the ticket hutch.

When the mail was late on the night of the great frost, the signal wires iced over and the lamps guttered low. A girl called Ada Sly came along the platform with a lantern in one hand and a baby wrapped in her shawl. She had missed the last connection to the mill town and had nowhere to go. The cat rose, stretched its long body up like a question mark, and walked ahead of her down the steps to the waiting room, stopping at every door to look back until she followed.

In the morning the lamps were lit, the rails were clear, and the bench was empty. Mr Pell found the saucer licked clean and, beside it, a single curl of ash-coloured fur on the cold tiles. Ada never saw the cat again, though she kept the lantern. Each winter after, when the first train came through the cutting, she set a saucer of milk by the waiting room door for whoever had walked her home.
