The grain was going damp in the store at Ketta, and the rats had learned the trick of the lock. Old Imsa the potter sent her boy for the cat that belonged to nobody, a grey creature with a notched ear that slept on the warm side of the oven wall and did not care who knew it. The boy came back with the cat under one arm and a complaint about its weight.

The cat was shown the store and then shown the door. It climbed onto a sack of barley, folded its forelegs under its chest, and shut its eyes. Imsa's neighbours came to look. A cat that sleeps through a rat is no cat at all, said the baker. The cat said nothing. It sat with its tail wrapped round its paws like a rope coiled on a dock, and it breathed slow, and the rats came out one at a time to test the air.

When the moon was over the wall, the first rat crossed the sill. The cat did not stir. The second rat ran across its tail, and that tail, which had been curled so neatly, uncoiled once and snapped shut around the rat's neck. By dawn there were eleven, laid in a row by the door, and the cat was asleep exactly where it had been put.

Imsa counted them and paid the boy in figs. She set a bowl of milk beside the sack. The cat opened one eye, considered the bowl, and closed the eye again, and Imsa decided that this was how a cat says thank you.
