Black and grey · Flash
A simple outline drawing of a cat seated side on, with its ears pointed and its tail curling around the base on the left. Shift your chair up, there, and let the bridesmaids have the bench, for this is a story about a grey cat who would not get up from a wedding. Mrs Tregenza's tom, Piper, had come up the lane from the harbour that morning and sat himself on the chapel step as if he'd been invited, and nobody had the heart to move him. Folk stepped round him in their good shoes and said he was a lucky omen, which is what people say when they have not yet been made to look after a cat.

The wedding was in the Pengelly barn, with the doors pinned open to the fields and the trestle tables dressed in white paper. Young Tom Ruddock couldn't keep still at the front, and the bride's grandmother had lent her own gold ring for the day, wrapped in a handkerchief in the pocket of the best man's jacket. Halfway through the speeches, the best man dropped the handkerchief in the long grass by the gate. Off went the whole party on their knees, crawling through the cow parsley, calling for the ring in whispers that grew louder by the minute.
Piper had not moved. He sat on the stone wall with his tail curled round his feet and his ears pricked at the bell in the church tower, watching the lot of them the way you'd watch a flock of noisy hens. When the vicar finally said the words, the cat rose, stretched, and came down off the wall with the handkerchief held carefully in his teeth. He laid it at Tom's polished boots, sat back down, and looked up as if he'd been waiting all afternoon for someone to ask.
So that's why the Ruddocks have never once let a grey cat out of the house, and why there's a small brass bell on every collar in the family. Piper's grandchildren still sit on that chapel step, tails curled, watching the lane for the next wedding.
