Sitting cat line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous black line drawing shows a cat sitting upright in profile, facing left with its eyes half closed. The tail curls around at the bottom left and the front paws rest at the base. The image is in solid black on white with no shading or colour, and the subject fills the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom, the cat has moved her post again, back to the end bench on the up platform where she sat all last winter. Father says she is waiting for the 6.14, but I have watched her properly now and she never once turns her head to the lines. She just sits the way she does in your picture of the pier at Ryde, tail curled round her paws, eyes narrowed as if the whole junction has been explained to her and she found it dull.

Mrs Gilchrist from the refreshment room says the cat came off the boat train in a fish crate in 1931 and has refused every platform since. Nobody has ever claimed her. Yesterday Mr Pryce tried to shift her into the lamp room for the damp, and she walked straight back out and settled on the same planks, shoulders square, facing the points. I held the door for him and thought of you, two thousand miles off at the mission, and how neither of us has ever managed to stay put when someone asked us to.

The 6.14 came in at twenty past seven. She didn't stir for it. When the last lamp went out along the platform she was still there, a single curl of black against the grey, keeping her face to the west where the rails run out past the water tower. I suppose somebody should. Write when the post comes. Your loving sister, Ada.
