The brig Persistence had been eleven weeks out of Gravesend when the cat stopped eating the salt pork and started watching the water. Mrs Ada Pell, the steward's widow who kept the galley, said it was the heat. Tobias Rook, the second mate, said it was rats gone quiet below the waterline. Nobody asked the cat, a grey tom the crew called Admiral, who sat on the taffrail every dusk with his tail wrapped round his feet and his chin lifted to the wind as if it owed him money.

On the seventy-third day the lookout cried a sail to the north-east. It was no sail at all but a spar of driftwood, and lashed to a hatch cover beside it was a man, alive and raving about lamps. They hauled him aboard with a boathook and a good deal of swearing. Admiral walked the length of the deck, sniffed the stranger's boots, then sat down by the rescue line with his head turned toward the empty horizon, as though he had already seen the shore and was waiting for the rest of them to catch up.
The stranger gave his name as Eli Vosk, a pilot from a harbour that appeared on none of the captain's charts. He said the cat had been the first thing he saw when the fog lifted, sitting on a wall above the breakwater with its tail curled like a question mark. Captain Morrow laughed at that until he noticed nobody else was laughing.
Land was raised nine days later, low and green, with a single lamp burning on a headland. Admiral went down the gangway first, tail high, and did not look back at the ship once. Mrs Pell kept a bowl of pork fat on the galley step for a month anyway, just in case.
