The sea wanted her, that was the trouble. Every autumn the swell came up the slipway at Gull Cove and asked for a sleeper, and the village was too proud to hand over a grown man. Maren, the net-mender's girl, had dozed in the lee of the boathouse the day the herring boats failed to come home. She lay curled with her knees to her chin and her cheek on a folded sail, and the wave lifted its white hand over the wall and set a single curl of foam beside her, the way a cat leaves a mouse on the mat to be admired.

Her father stood over her with a lantern and did not shout. He sang the one song she could never abide, the dreary one about the tide mill and the miller's widow, and the wave paused to listen. It grew sulky, then restless, then it started humming the chorus under its breath, which is how you know a wave has lost interest in you. It drew back down the slipway, slower each time, until only a thin wavering stroke was left on the water.

Maren woke at dawn with sand in her hair and the boats coming round the point, low in the water with silver. So if the wind turns tonight and you hear the foam knocking at the shutters, don't go to the door with a candle. Lie still, keep your breathing slow, and let it see that you are dreaming of something it cannot reach.
