Skeletal hand holding a crescent moon on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A skeletal hand rises from the bottom of the frame, with its fingers curled around a large crescent moon that rests above it. The bones and outlines are drawn in bold black linework, while the moon is shaded with stippled dots that give it a soft grey gradient. Coloured tattoos are partly visible at the left and bottom edges, and the piece is centred on a smooth area of lower leg against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it's the last of the good oil. Nobody on this ring has seen open sky since the shutters came down, so you'll have to take my word for the moon. It hung over Calder Reach like a paring knife, pale and dusted grey, and every night a hand rose out of the black water to hold it steady above the breakwater.

The hand was bone all the way down, each finger jointed like a rope of knots, and the old tide clerks swore it had been there before the first ships. Young Harl Vennor, who swept the lamp galleries for his keep, once climbed the breakwater stair with a bucket of tallow and asked it plainly why it bothered. The hand didn't answer in words. It only tilted, and the moon tipped toward the water, and the whole harbour went white with a tide nobody had asked it to climb.

So Harl learned the rule. You hold a thing that's too heavy for the world, you hold it gently, and you never ask what it weighs. He kept the stair swept and the bucket full for thirty winters, and on the last night of his life the hand reached down and opened its fingers to him. The moon came loose, no bigger than a thumbnail by then, and rolled into his palm.

He carried it down to the harbour and let it drop, and that is why the sea is silver at night and why none of you should go wading after it. Mind the lamp now. Those fingers are still out there, waiting for someone light enough to be trusted.
