Sketched black cat on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black cat sits in profile with its head turned, drawn with loose, sketched linework and solid black fill across the head and back. Ink splashes and long vertical drips run down from the body, and faint hatching shows around the legs and tail. The image is black and grey against a dark backdrop, with the arm filling the right side of the frame.

The snow shut the pass before noon, so the landlady of the Tallow Hob gives you the room behind the kitchen, where the stove still ticks like a clock that has forgotten the hour. You arrive with wet boots and an inkwell rattling in your satchel, and the only other occupant of the parlour is a black cat on the settle, sitting in profile with its head turned towards the window as if it has heard somebody coming for a very long time.

Mrs Hanley says the cat is called Vesper and has never once come when called. You are copying a parish ledger for the magistrate in the morning, a long column of debts and christenings written in a hand that wanders. When you uncork the ink to refill your pen, a gust rattles the shutters, your wrist jolts, and a dark line runs off the desk and down the table leg, thick as a rope. Vesper drops from the settle, steps through the spill without looking down, and leaves a trail of small black prints across the first page.
You scold it, you suppose, though you cannot hear your own voice over the wind. The cat sits down on the ledger, right on the entry for the mill-race drowning of 1791, and will not be moved. When you finally lift it away, the name beneath is blotted clean, as though someone had dipped a thumb in the ink and pressed it there. Mrs Hanley, when you bring the page to her at first light, only nods and says the pass is open now, and the cat always knows before the road does.
Outside, the snow has stopped. Through the window you see Vesper on the sill, a black shape cut from the white, and below it the frost has run in long dark streaks down the glass, the way ink runs when the page is tilted and nobody thinks to stop it.
