Black cartoon cat tattoo on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated black cat in a simple cartoon style, with tall pointed ears, large round white eyes, whiskers and a curled tail, is tattooed on the inner wrist. The cat is filled in solid black with clean edges, and the white eyes are left as bare skin. The plain, pale skin behind it keeps the design as the clear focus of the photograph.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, because it gets into everything, the way the rain got into Hartley's Travelling Marvels that autumn. The big top had more holes than canvas by October, and the bills had been pinned so often to the same post outside Halifax that you could read three seasons of faded clowns on it. Ezra Hartley counted the takings every night on an upturned crate, and every night the sum was smaller, and every night the black cat watched him do it from the top of the ring post.

She had never done a trick in her life. The strongman tried to teach her to ride the barrel, and the bearded lady tried to fold her into a hoop, but she simply sat with her tail curled round her feet and looked at them with those great round eyes, as if they were the ones who had come in out of the rain. Ezra called her Mistress Quiet. The children called her nothing at all, because they were too busy staring at her.

Then the bank came with its paper, the lion was sold to a man in Doncaster, and the tent went down for the last time on a Tuesday. Nobody saw the cat go. Ezra swore she was still sitting in the empty ring when the lorries pulled away, a small black shape on the trampled straw, waiting for an audience that was never coming back.

Some nights, if the wind is right, the old folk on Cherry Street say a lamp still burns over that field. And if you walk past slow enough, you will see her there, sitting very straight, not performing for anyone.
