Two red roses on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a foot wearing a black flip-flop, with a tattoo of two red roses and green leaves across the top of the foot. The roses have bold dark outlines and smooth red shading, and the leaves are rendered in green. The foot rests on a grey concrete surface, with black nail polish on the toes and the strap crossing beside the design.

At Harrowmere the Saturday dances were held in a tin-roofed hall beside the mill, and the fiddler, Tobias Crane, played with his back to the door so he could watch the floor. Two sisters came every week, Nell and Agnes Pryor, each with a red rose pinned at the collar. The roses came from the vicarage wall, cut the morning after their mother was buried, and the sisters had sworn to wear them until one of them was spoken for.

Nell danced with the miller's boy, Will Hadley, all through the summer, and Agnes danced with nobody at all. She sat on the bench by the stove with her hands folded over her knees and watched the bow move. When the autumn fairs came and the roses browned at their edges, Agnes took hers off and laid it in the fiddle case without a word. Tobias did not ask why. He only tuned a little higher and played the old reel slower, so the floor had time to notice who was looking at whom.
At the last dance before the frost, Will crossed the boards and asked Agnes instead, and Nell stood by the door with her rose gone to paper in her fist. Agnes took the hand offered her. Nell went out into the lane, where the cobbles were grey with rain, and found the vicarage wall still green with leaves.
Next morning Tobias found two fresh roses tucked under the hall door, one red and one blushing, and beside them a single green leaf tied with thread so the wind would not take it.
