Skull and cityscape tattoo design in grey pencil

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed pencil drawing of a tattoo design, arranged in a tall panel. A cracked skull sits in the lower right, with partial block lettering across the lower left and smoky city skylines with buildings and clouds above. The shading uses soft greys and strong dark contrasts, and the composition is built around a central vertical shape.

The ferry from Carrick Quay had not run on time since the foundry closed, so on the island we learned to read the city by its smoke. Grey and low meant the last shift was still burning. Black and rising meant someone had lost an argument. From the lighthouse steps you could watch the towers across the sound stand up one by one out of the cloud, and my grandfather swore they leaned a little closer every winter, as if they wanted to hear what we said.

I found the skull on the morning after the big storm, wedged in the kelp below the old slipway. It had split along the crown like a dropped plate, and someone had once painted a band of letters across the stone beside it. Only E, D and P had survived the salt. I carried it up in a fish crate, because I could not think what else to do with a thing that had clearly been looking at the city for longer than I had.

Agnes at the harbour office wanted it logged and handed to the constable on the mainland. "It's a relic, Tom, not a find," she said, tapping the ledger. I said nothing. I had seen the fog come off the water at dusk, lifting over the rooftops like a sheet pulled from furniture, and I thought the skull deserved a view rather than a form.

So at sunset I set it on the ledge facing the sound, cracked side to the wind. The smoke over the towers thinned for a moment, and a single gull rose from the far quay and circled the spire where the clock had stopped. The city looked smaller than it ever had from the island, and I left the skull there, keeping watch the way it had always watched us.
