A heavily tattooed forearm and hand in black, grey and red ink reach towards a bare hand with a ring against a plain white background.

Tattooed forearm and hand reaching towards a bare hand

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two arms reach towards each other across a plain light grey background, one bare and one fully tattooed. The tattooed forearm carries dense black and grey shapes with fine detail, plus a small red area near the wrist. The composition is simple and sharp, with the two hands almost touching at the centre of the frame.

Dear Anna,

The ferry rope came down again this morning, sagging over the gorge like wet washing, and I spent an hour on the far bank with my hand out, the way you showed me, waiting for Tomas to lean across with the hook. He never quite reaches. The gap is the width of two arms and a little more, and the wind takes whatever you offer and turns it into a question.

Father says the pass has always been like this, that the old tolls were paid by people willing to keep their hands open in the cold. I wrote the ledger in pencil because the ink froze in the hut again. Eleven carts crossed on Thursday. Mrs Haldane's goat did not, and she still blames me for it, though I told her a goat has never once trusted a rope.

I have tied your red wool to the line where the two sides almost meet, so we can find the place in fog. The ring you left with me sits on the nail beside the ledger, and every evening I turn it once so it does not rust to the wood. When you come back in spring, do not call out. Just put your fingers where the wool is, and I will be there to take them.

Yours across the gap, Nell
