Small dot tattoos on fingers
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a rough stone surface, one with the fingers curled over the edge and the other lying flat, with several metal rings worn on the fingers. Small black dot tattoos sit on the side of a finger on each hand, with simple, evenly spaced marks. The photograph has warm, soft tones and a shallow depth of field, with the wearer's face and hair blurred out of focus at the top of the frame.

Nobody in Holme Cross could say how many walls Maud Ashworth had built, but she could, and she kept the count on her fingers. With every stone she lifted and settled, she pressed a dot of soot from the firebox onto the side of a finger with her thumb, each mark set as neatly as a stitch. Tam thought it was a grand joke until he watched her lay a dyke across the Ringing Brow in a single week, eleven hundred stones, her knuckles grey with dust and her dots running up both hands in two straight rows.

He asked her once why she bothered. She was wiping her hands on her apron, and she looked at him as if he were a wall with a crack in it. "Count what you lay, lad, or you'll not know what's yours when the weather comes." That was all she would say about it, and he took it for one of her sayings, the kind she gave out with the bread and the bad tea.
She died in the back end of the year, with the last gap in the Brow still open, seven stones wide where the ground dipped toward the beck. Tam went up with a barrow and a cold pot of soot. He set the first stone, pressed his thumb to the soot and then to his finger, and went on like that, one dot for each, until his hand was full and he started on the other. When the seventh stone sat true, he sat down on the wall and looked at his fingers, dark and orderly in the thin light.
The wind came over the Brow and found no gap in the wall, only a boy counting stones twice to be sure.
