Skull tattoo inside an ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey skull with detailed teeth sits inside the inner ear, with the cranium at the top and the jaw curving down along the ear's ridge. The soft grey shading gives the skull some depth against the skin, and the tattoo fills most of the frame, with the ear and some dark hair visible around it.

The gull that hit the lamp glass has been dead since Tuesday, and you are still listening for it. On Scarrow, the island nobody else wants, sound carries strangely. Mrs Abernethy at the mainland post office swore she could hear the lighthouse bell from her kitchen, and the tide cave under the north cliff gives back every word you say, a beat late, like someone who wants to get in first.

Your brother Tam left you the keeper's ledger and a tin of shells he'd gathered for the tourists who never came. Among them was a whelk, grey and ridged, its mouth curling inward like a closed hand. You held it to your ear the night the fog came down and heard the sea, and under the sea a dry rattle, teeth knocking against teeth. You told yourself it was grit. You said so aloud to the empty kitchen, and the kitchen said it back to you a beat late.

On the fourth night you went down the cliff path with a torch and a spade. The cave smelled of kelp and old iron. Behind a fall of stones you found the skull, not Tam's, not anyone's you knew, the bone bleached to pewter and the jaw hinged open as if mid-sentence. You set it on the flat rock and talked to it until the torch failed.

In the morning you climbed back up with the whelk in your pocket and the skull wrapped in a fish box, and you put the shell back on its shelf in the lamp room. Nobody on the mainland has asked about the ledger since. Sometimes, when the wind drops, you hear something tapping patiently at the far end of the room, and you lean in and tell it, quietly, that you're listening.
