Skull and spine tattoo inside the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a skull with a segmented spine tattooed inside the upper and middle part of an ear. The skull is drawn in grey with soft shading on the cranium and cheekbone, and dark ink marks the eye socket and teeth. The spine runs down towards the lobe, and the ear's natural curves shape the composition.

Sit closer, lad, the wind's got into the stove again and I'll not shout over it. You want the one about Dorrie Mallin and the bell at Carrick Skerry? Everybody on this coast knows the bit where the bell rings with no rope to it. Fewer know why she kept her ear to the cold iron of the gallery rail every night that winter, listening for it.

She'd had the skull put in on the inside of her left ear at Pennick's parlour above the chandlers, the week before her man Tobias sailed for the Greenland whalers. Old Pennick had a book of drawings pinned to his wall, and she picked the one with the bone grinning sideways, as if it had just heard a joke it didn't much like. He pricked the spine down the curl of the ear too, little knuckles going to the lobe, so that when she turned her head to the sea it looked like she was carrying the whole skeleton with her, listening.

Tobias came home in April with his hands gone white from the ice and a story nobody believed. Dorrie didn't argue. She only tapped her ear and said, the bell told me you'd be back by the spring tide, and it did. The bell had rung on the night he turned for home, though the skerry had been dead quiet for forty years.

So here's the thing about the spine, boy. Each knuckle in it is a day you're still owed. Pennick counts them out for you when you sit in his chair. Dorrie's ran to the lobe, and she never did say what she was owed, only that she'd collect it when the bell stopped.
