The snow had sealed the Hollin Pass for three days when the knocking began at the inn door, slow and even, like someone keeping time. Maggie Thorne lifted the bar and found a man standing in the drift with his bones showing through his coat, and above his collar a grinning skull, polished grey as a river stone. Behind him, on the step, sat a pumpkin carved with a face, its candle guttering in the wind.

He asked for a bed and a seat by the fire, and he paid in coins older than the inn. Her father had always said never refuse a guest in a storm, but he had never said what to do when the guest did not breathe. Maggie set bread and ale on the table anyway. The skeleton who sat beside the grinning man ate nothing. The grinning man talked of his brothers, who had walked the roads for a hundred winters looking for a supper they could keep.
Near midnight the pumpkin rolled in from the step on its own, its candle burning steady now, and it lit the beams where the old stories had been scratched into the wood. Maggie saw that every face scratched there was one she had seen that night. The grinning man bowed. He said the debt was paid by the bread, and that he had only come to see whether anyone still set a place for the dead in a hard winter.
By morning the drift had gone from the doorway and the table was bare, except for a fresh-cut pumpkin on the step with its face carved into a smile. Maggie left it there all winter. Every night after that she set one extra bowl by the fire, and the snow never once blocked the Hollin Pass again.
