Sky's the limit script with cloud
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of black script lettering reads sky's the limit across the skin, with the letters joined in a flowing hand. A thin, unshaded cloud outline extends from the end of the word limit. The ink is solid black on warm, lightly lit skin, with the dark edge of denim visible at the top of the frame.

Your mother says you have been sitting on the harbour wall since Tuesday with a rucksack packed for Canada, so I am writing this on the back of a sail pattern, because it is the only paper in the shop not already covered in string measurements. Hold it to the window and you will see the ribs I cut for the Scarborough boy's dragon in 1961. It never flew. I got the tension wrong and it spun into the bay like a dropped hat.

I am not telling you this to frighten you. I wanted to be a pilot once. I stood on the cliff every winter watching the gulls and thought the sky was a door with no lock on it. Your great-aunt Edith found me up there one January and asked what the sky had ever given me. I had no answer, so I went down and learned to splice rope instead, and that was the best thing that ever happened to me, though it took forty years to admit it.
Your nan painted SKY'S THE LIMIT on the shop sign the year we married, and people still think it is a joke about kites. It is not a joke. It is true, and it is the same kind of true as a reel of line. Every kite I ever built had a limit in its hand. The good ones were flown by people who knew exactly where to stop letting out.
So go to Canada if you must. Take the pattern. I have drawn a small cloud at the foot of it, the same shape your nan pointed at over the pier, and when you find a window with a view of open water, fold the paper into a tail and send me a line. Tie the other end to something you can come back to. Mind the wind on the way down.
