Sleeping baby in angel wings with script

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo shows a small sleeping figure curled within a pair of feathered angel wings that arc over it. Two lines of cursive script sit above and below the image, reading Never in my arms and Always in my heart. The ink is solid black on skin with no shading or colour, and the composition is centred across the upper back.

The rain had been coming sideways off the Tollgate roofs since seven, and by eleven my fingers were blue from the wire. I sat under the tarpaulin with a tin of pins, a roll of waxed thread and forty-odd umbrellas hung from the hooks like bats waiting for a verdict. Most were men's black gents, bent at the spokes from being wrestled through bus doors. Nobody ever brings me a good one.

Idris Vane came on the Thursday with a yellow child's umbrella folded under his arm, rain beading on his collar. Two ribs had snapped at the top, and the canopy had torn in a fan along one seam. "Don't replace anything," he said. "Just make it open the way it did." I asked what it had been for. He turned it over slowly, the way you'd check a letter for a second page. "My girl held it over her little brother's pram every morning on the stairs. Said it kept the drizzle off his face."

I spent two evenings on it. I bent new steel ribs to match the old ones, and when I reached the torn seam I stitched the edge in small scallops, each one curving up like a feather. Idris watched me finish the last one under the lamp and said nothing for a long while.

When he came back on the Saturday he opened it in the drizzle, and the canopy rose in one clean yellow arc above his head. He stood there a good minute, letting the water run off the edge onto his shoes, then folded it and tucked it under his arm as though it were something that might still need carrying.
