Sitting dog outline on the side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms the outline of a dog sitting upright, facing left, with its head tilted and ears drooping. The linework is uniform and minimal, with no shading or fill inside the figure. The dog sits centrally against plain, softly lit skin, with a small patch of another tattoo visible at the top right edge.

Stop fidgeting, Maureen, I am getting to the dog. Some of you were in Form Four in 1974 and some of you were too busy behind the bike sheds to notice him, so sit down and let an old woman talk.

He came to the gate the autumn they fitted the new bell. Thin as a coat hanger, one ear up and one ear down, and he sat exactly where the railings met the pavement, facing the school as if he had been posted there. Mr Haddow the caretaker tried to shoo him off with a broom. The dog simply sat back down, head on one side, listening to that bell the way you listen to a tune you half know.
Every afternoon for three years he was there at ten to four. Nobody owned him. We fed him crusts from the tuck shop, and Denise Ullman swore he could tell Tuesday from Thursday by the smell of the dinner ladies' gravy. When the last bell rang he would lift his head and then go back to sitting by the gate, waiting for something that never came through it. He was never anyone's, and that was the trouble, because he waited as though someone had promised.
The summer we left, he didn't come. The bell rang and the gate stayed empty, and Mr Haddow stood in the car park a long while with his cap in his hands. In September a letter arrived for the head teacher from a farm six miles out, saying a grey dog with one ear down had been found curled in their hay barn, too old to walk far. Mr Haddow read it aloud in assembly, and nobody laughed. Denise still keeps a stale crust in her handbag, Maureen. Ask her, if you don't believe me.
