Sleeping cherub within wings on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A sleeping baby angel with closed eyes is curled up inside a pair of feathered wings, with its head resting against one wing. The figure is rendered in soft, smooth black and grey shading with fine feather detail and a bold dark outline around the whole design. The tattoo sits on pale, freckled skin against a plain background, with the composition shaped like a heart.

Now the canvas sagged at the peak, and the band played to a half-empty ring of farmers' wives and their husbands' dogs.

She found the boy in the wardrobe wagon a little after midnight, curled inside the left wing as if it were a hammock. Tomas was nine, the ringmaster's nephew, and he had been told twice that the rig was not a bed. His cheek lay against a fold of grey-shaded feather, one fist tucked under his chin, and the lamp caught the dust on his eyelashes. She did not wake him. Instead she sat on an upturned crate with her needle and worked a loose quill back into its socket, the way her mother had taught her in a different tent, in a different decade.

The manager came in at one with a bottle and a ledger under his arm. He said the Lisbon booking had fallen through, and the Dublin one too, and that by Easter there would be nobody left to pay for feathers. Dilys went on stitching. When he finally saw the boy, he stopped talking and stood very still for a long moment, then took off his hat.

"Leave the wing on him," Dilys said. "It's the only thing we've got left that still knows how to hold someone up."
