Geometric fox on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A fox head faces left, shown in angular facets of orange, red and teal with bold black outlines and sharp yellow-brown eyes. The fox's ears and muzzle are built from flat geometric planes, while softer watercolour-like blending appears along the neck and shoulder. Below it, a grey and teal ornamental shape is partly visible against a black background.

The sailors had decided the fox was a bad omen before the ship cleared the Humber, though nobody could say which of them had spoken first. It came aboard at Hull with a crate of lamp glass and never went ashore again. By the second week it had claimed the bowsprit as its own, sitting with its sharp amber eyes fixed on the horizon while the cook, old Mabry, threw it scraps of salt cod and muttered that a fox on a ship was just a thief with better manners.

Off the Dogger Bank the fog came down thick as wet wool, and the log line went slack for three days. The mate, Tobias Quaile, swore the fox had stolen the wind and wanted it over the side. Mabry only shook his head and pointed. Down the rail, where the fox had padded, the water had gone flat and teal and clear as glass, and through it you could see the lamp crates glowing like coins on a sea floor.

They followed the fox that night. It walked the rail on its neat black feet, stopping where the planks turned to sharp facets of shadow, and each time it paused the fog thinned a little. By dawn the Baltic was spread out in front of them, grey-green and blue, and the fox had gone down the gangway onto the quay at Riga with its tail held high. Quaile never once saw it leave. He only found a single orange hair caught on the cleat where the fox had been sitting, and he kept it in his tin for the rest of his life.
