Small 11 numerals on the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a person's bare upper back showing a small tattoo of the number 11 in a black, serif-style typeface. The numerals are filled solid black with clean, even edges and sit to the side of the shoulder blade. The background is plain grey, and the person wears a pale tie-dyed bra with a thin strap, so the skin tones and black ink stand out clearly.

The rain had settled over Halsey Market before first light, and each pitch was marked with white numerals on a black board so traders could find their places in the grey. Number eleven belonged to Ansel Pym, who mended clocks for people who did not really want the time. Every morning he laid out eleven brass bells on his trestle, each a different size, and every morning most of the market walked past without stopping.

One wet Tuesday a girl called Hettie Vane halted where the water ran off the awning in a thin silver line. She had no coin, only a cracked pocket watch that had stopped at a quarter past nine. Pym turned it over in his hands and said the trouble was not the works but the hour it had been asked to keep. He would take no money for it. He asked her instead to tell him what had happened at a quarter past nine on the day it stopped.
She told him slowly. Her mother had waited at the bus stop by the chapel, and the bus had come early, as it always did in the rain, and nobody had been there to wave. Pym nodded as though that were the answer to a sum he had been working for years. He wound the watch, set it against the largest bell, and struck the trestle once. Eleven notes rang out together, a noise like gravel poured onto tin, and the rain seemed to pause long enough to hear them.
Hettie went home with the watch ticking in her palm. Pym packed his bells in straw and, for the first time in thirty years, left his black board standing on the stall overnight. The white numerals caught the lamplight, and anyone who wanted to find eleven could find it easily.
