Small fine line clover on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of four heart-shaped loops arranged in a cross, forming a clover-like motif, sits on the outer forearm. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the tattoo is set against bare skin with a fine gold bangle just above it. The background shows a bright floral patterned skirt and a coloured crop top, which draw the eye away from the small, centred design.

The relief boat was late again, so I kept the logbook myself on the Tuesday, the way Ada used to, in pencil because the ink had frozen in its bottle. Visibility four miles. Wind south-west, freshening. Lamp trimmed at nine. I wrote the figures and then sat with the pencil over the margin, because she had always drawn something there, a small thing no one at the Trinity House office would ever read.

She had come out to the rock with a cardboard box of seed and a notion that clover would hold the thin soil on the lee side of the store. It did, mostly. Every June the patch went white with flower and the gulls walked through it like customers. She liked the clover with four leaves best. On the walk back from the landing she would pinch the lobes apart and show me the hearts she had found, turning each one until its stem sat straight.
The boat came on the Thursday with new wicks and a letter in a hand I did not know. Ada had gone to her sister's in Penzance in March. She had left the seed box and a note saying she would not be coming back to the rock, and that she had pressed the last four-leaf clover into the logbook, though she had put it in the wrong month, so I would have to hunt for it.
I found it on the April page, flat and brown, four hearts joined at a single stem. I held it up to the lamp until the light came through the petals. Then I wrote the date beside it in my own neat hand, and under that, Clover, and went up to light the lamp.
