My brother Ned kept a Tiger Moth on the firm sand at Hollin Bay the summer before the war, and every morning he took it up over the boarding house roof to wave at Mrs Garrow's bedroom window. She threw a boot at him once. He came back laughing and said the boot was a fair answer to a fair question.

The question everyone asked was why a man with a bad knee and a mill wage would spend his savings on canvas, petrol and a borrowed field. Ned always gave the same reply. 'It's not that complicated, Sol. You go up, you come down, and in between the sea looks like a tablecloth somebody forgot to fold.' Nobody believed him, so he started posting me cards with a little black cross drawn on the front, wings out, and one word underneath: Coming.

He never did come back from that last Sunday, when the wind turned off the land and the Moth went into the shallows past the groyne. The card that arrived the week after was still in the post, stamped the Tuesday before, and it had only the drawing on it, pressed so hard the pencil had torn the paper through. I keep it propped against the mantel clock. Every August the sun comes through the bay window at the hour he used to fly over, and his small black cross lays itself across the wallpaper, coming in low to land.
