Dorothy Vane had kept the listening dish on Hob Moor for thirty-one years, long after the Post Office stopped paying anyone to climb the ladder. Every Tuesday she logged the hiss, the hum of the relay from the Hebrides, and the odd burst of nothing that the men from the university called interference. Her nephew Callum thought she should sell the kit for scrap. She told him the scrap could wait until the signal finished.

The reply came in November, on a damp afternoon when the moor was the colour of wet newspaper. It was not a voice. It was a tone, three pulses and a gap, repeated until the needle on the meter lay down flat. She wrote it into the ledger the way she wrote everything, in pencil, then drew beside it a small round head with two slanted eyes, because her hand wanted to draw something and that was what came out.

Callum laughed when he saw the page. Then he went quiet, because the next Tuesday the tone came back changed: three pulses, a gap, and then one long note that rose at the end like a question. Dorothy had no answer to give. She turned the dial to the local station, where a presenter was reading out the tide times for Whitby, and she waited with her tea going cold beside the ledger.

On the Friday the frost came down thick and the kitchen window fogged over. Callum found her with a finger on the glass, tracing a ring the size of a coin, round and clean. When he asked what it was she said it was the reply, and that they had the manners to send back their own shape. Then she wiped it away with her sleeve before the kettle boiled.
