Fine line black alien head tattoo on the top of a foot, shown beside a second foot in black strappy sandals on a concrete pavement.

Small alien head on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet in black strappy sandals stand on grey concrete, photographed from above. A small alien head with large almond-shaped eyes is tattooed in thin black linework on the top of the right foot, just below the ankle strap. The ink is black only, with simple outlines and no shading, and the tattoo is a small focal point against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Oakes had mended shoes on Gull Street for forty years and thought he had seen every sort of mud that came off a boot. Then a customer from the harbour cottages brought in a pair of black strapped sandals with a buckle snapped clean through, and asked him to fix the strap quietly, because the thing in her pocket did not care for the smell of glue.

The thing in her pocket was no bigger than a thimble and had a head shaped like a blown egg, with two black eyes tilted at the corners as if it were always squinting into the sun. It had come down in the marsh behind the cottages on the Thursday, in a light that hummed like a fridge left open. It wanted, it made clear, a map of the town and a shoe to walk in, because its own legs had been left somewhere over the Atlantic.

Oakes stitched the strap while the creature scratched the streets into a scrap of paper with a bent hatpin: the lighthouse, the chip shop, the square where the clock had stopped in 1967. When it reached the marsh it paused and drew a small circle with a line through it, then looked up at him with those patient eyes. He understood then that it was not lost. It was marking the place where it had left something of its own, and where it meant to return.

He never told the council. He keeps the map in his till drawer beside the spare laces, and on Thursday evenings, when the marsh lights come up pale green over the reeds, he walks down to the cottages and looks for that circle, half expecting the sandals to come back up the road on their own.
