He waited through the foxtrot and the quickstep and a whole sad waltz, leaning on the sticky rail by the cloakroom while I iced forty cupcakes in the blue and teal striped cases Mum had ordered from Bristol.

The stencil for the cat was still tucked in my apron pocket. Pinny, our ginger-and-cream tom, had died the winter before, and the pink bow Mum tied on him every Sunday had gone into the rag bag with the others. So I drew him onto the icing with a cocktail stick instead: two pink triangles for ears, liquorice whiskers, and a bow tied so neatly that when Mum came through the kitchen door she stopped and put a floury hand to her chest.

The band struck up the last number at half past ten. Eustace came back in his good grey suit, asked again, and I told him the cakes would not ice themselves. He took the one with the cat on it from the tray without asking, looked at it for a long moment, and said Pinny always did have the best manners in the parish. Then he set it on the cloakroom shelf facing the room, bowed like a man at a wedding, and held out his hand.

We danced until the lights went up, and when I went back for the tray the cat was still there, grinning out at the empty hall with its pink ears up, a crumb of icing stuck to its bow.
