Small black cross on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black cross sits on the inner wrist, drawn with clean, slightly uneven linework and no shading. The ink is the only colour in the frame, set against pale skin, a silver chain bracelet with a heart charm and a sandy, out of focus background. The cross sits near the centre of the frame, leaving plenty of open skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost came down the valley the same week the old sexton's wife was buried, and Tomas Brede went out before light with a bucket of lime and a stick of charred willow. He drew a short upright and a crossbar on the kitchen-garden wall, the way his mother had shown him, and he drew it quickly, because the sky was already the colour of pewter and the men from the big house were coming up the lane with their carts.

Harle, the foreman, laughed when he saw it. He said the wall was to come down for the new road and a bit of chalk would not stop a spade. Tomas said nothing. He hung a small tin heart from a nail beside the mark, the one his wife had worn, and went back to his beans. The road crew worked the far side of the lane all that winter, and the frost took everything it could reach, but the rows below the cross stayed green and the leaves did not blacken at their edges.

Tomas died in the spring, and his granddaughter Ilse kept the garden after him. Each year she mixed fresh lime and walked the wall with the same willow stick, and each year the beans on that side came up first. Harle grew old too. When the new road finally reached the kitchen garden, his son was the one holding the crowbar, and the first stone that came away showed a cross scratched deep into the mortar beneath, older than the house.

Harle took off his cap. Nobody in the lane spoke until the last cart had turned and the frost began to settle on the bare ground again.
