Small arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist is held towards the camera against a blurred purple background. A small black arrow is tattooed on the middle finger, drawn in thin, single-needle linework with no shading. The ink is black and the photograph is shallow in focus, leaving the hand sharp and the background soft.

The lorry is already idling when you reach the barrier at Harrow Ford, its exhaust hanging in the cold like a second, slower checkpoint. Sergeant Teodora Malk takes your papers and reads them twice, then looks past them at your right hand resting on the sill of the open window. You have kept it closed since the dawn crossing at Lindle, and the silver ring on your finger knocks the glass each time the wipers swing.

She knows the old marking, though she pretends she doesn't. A small arrow pressed into the wax of a message sleeve means the river road, never the bridge. The ledger in your cab belongs to a widow in Sellin who has waited eleven years for the account of the mill her husband lost on the wrong side of the line. Nobody has ever sent it the honest way, and you are not sure you will either.
"What does the arrow say?" Teodora asks quietly, as though the rain might be listening.
"That the road is shorter if you're willing to get your boots wet," you tell her, and it is nearly the truth. She laughs once, a short bark that surprises you both, and stamps the papers without signing them. "The ford's higher than the map says. Keep to the stones on the left."
You open your hand at last on the gearstick, and the pale mark of a seal shows across the palm where the wax has pressed through the glove. The wipers stop. Ahead, the water runs grey and fast, and beyond it a single lamp burns in a window that has been waiting for you.
