Small anchor tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple black anchor sits on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm. The linework is thin and even, with the solid black shank and ring at the top and a curved stock across the middle. The arm rests on white bedding beside a blue and white striped sleeve, with a rose gold chain bracelet of linked hearts just below the tattoo.

The band has run out of waltzes by the time Danny finds you at the cloakroom counter, rubbing a smudge of ink off a ticket stub with your thumb. "They're playing the last foxtrot," he says, "and my mother has told me I'm not to go home without dancing with the only girl in Sallowby who doesn't laugh at my hat."

You go out onto the sprung floor under the glass ball, where the lights turn everyone the colour of weak tea. He dances like a man walking a deck in a swell, always a half-step ahead of the beat, steering you by the small of the back. Between turns you see the anchor he had put on his wrist the week he signed on, black and plain, a joke he has never explained. You ask what it's meant to hold.

"Nothing, that's the point," he says. "A proper anchor drags in a gale. This one just reminds me I'll come back up." You tell him an anchor is a poor thing to bring to a dance, and he laughs so hard he steps on your shoe. The band slides into its closing bars and the floor thins out around you.

When the ferry lights are the only thing left moving on the water, you find a folded chart tucked under the cloakroom ticket tray. Someone has pencilled a small cross on the breakwater and written beneath it, in a hand that tilts toward the sea, "Come and find me when you can't sleep." You pin it inside your coat, switch off the glass ball, and leave the hall in the dark.
