Small black symbol tattoo on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of an abstract symbol, resembling a looped stroke with a curved tail, sits on the inside of a wrist. The ink is solid and dark with smooth, even lines and no shading. The forearm and raised hand fill the frame against a plain white background and dark clothing, with the tattoo placed low on the wrist.

The snow had been falling on the Coldharbour Pass since Martinmas, and by the second week of December the innkeeper's wife, Maud Tallow, had stopped counting the travellers who came up the track with frost in their beards. Most of them were carters. A few were priests. One was a girl of about twelve who would not give her name and would not sit near the fire, only stood at the window looking out at the dark.

Maud's husband had built the inn on a shoulder of rock above the road. Above the door he had fixed an iron bracket, bent in a long loop with a curled tail at the bottom, and every night he hung a lantern from it, the way his father had. The loop, he said, was for the hook that caught a man when the road went out from under him. Nobody in the valley believed him, but nobody took the lantern down either.

On the third night the wind turned and the lantern went out before midnight. Maud climbed onto the settle with the tinder box, her fingers too cold to strike it. The girl came to the door without being asked, took the box from her, and lit the wick in one try. Then she laid her palm flat against the iron curl and said the road was clear as far as the stile.

By morning the drifts had shifted and the track showed through. The girl was gone, and the snow on the step was undisturbed except for one small print leading out past the lantern, with no print coming back. Maud kept the lantern lit that winter and every winter after, and she never once went looking for the girl's name.
