Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor sits on the lower leg just above the ankle, shown from behind against a paved pavement with trees and a road in the background. The anchor is drawn in simple, bold black linework with solid fills, and the image is monochrome. The composition is a full-length view of both legs and white canvas trainers, with the tattoo as the focal point.

The chain ran out with a sound like a dropped piano, and Maggie Doyle stood on the foredeck in her socks and counted the links as they rattled over the bow. Thirty. Forty. The coaster had been drifting toward Scarrow Bar for three hours in a squall that smelled of diesel and cold iron, and Pell, the skipper, who had never once apologised for anything in eleven years, was bellowing down the engine room hatch for more revs.

The anchor was the first thing she had ever paid for with her own money. She'd had it done in a back room above a chip shop in Birkenhead the winter her mother died, a small black anchor just above the ankle, no bigger than a thumbnail. The man who inked it had said the lines would soften in twenty years and she'd said good, she didn't want it shouting. Nobody on the boat ever saw it. She kept her canvas shoes on through every watch, and she left them under the galley stove each night like a dog that knew its place.

The chain stopped singing at fifty-two links. The Marian Rose lurched, shrugged, and began to swing, and Maggie felt the old fear come up through the soles of her feet. Anchors dragged. Everyone on the Mersey knew that. So she kicked the shoes off, climbed down the ladder into the black water to her knees, and felt along the shackle with numb fingers until the pin was seated and the flukes had found the sand.

When she came back up the ladder, Pell was standing at the rail with a cigarette he hadn't lit. He looked at her bare feet and said nothing. The boat held. Above them the gulls went on arguing about the wind, and Maggie sat on the wet deck with her ankles pressed against the iron, waiting for her heart to slow to the same pace as the ship.
