Treble clef tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black treble clef sits on the outer side of an ankle, with the lower leg visible above a white canvas low-top trainer. The linework is bold and even, with the ink fully filled rather than shaded. The ink is the only colour in the frame, set against warm skin and a pale wooden floor.

The fiddle would not hold its tune after the frost came off the beck, and Wilf Hobday blamed the spruce he had cut at the edge of Harrow Hanger. He said the wood had been listening to the wrong things. His daughter Nell said that was nonsense, and took the fiddle up the lane one evening to prove it.

At the first beech she drew a plain scale, up and down, until a voice answered from behind the trunks. It sang the line back to her slow and crooked, the way a child sings what it has only heard once. It asked her for the curl, the little looped sign that sits at the start of every song and tells the notes where to go. Without it, the voice said, the wood was only noise. Nell said she had no such thing. The voice said everyone had one somewhere about them, and that it would give her every bell in the parish true in exchange.
Nell thought of the ink pot on her father's bench. She dipped a thorn in soot and drew the curl on the back of the voice's hand, which was cold as creek water and so thin she could see the bark through it. "Now sing," she said, and it did, and the notes came out whole.
Next morning every bell in Harrow rang clean, and the choir stopped quarrelling over the descant. Wilf's fiddle sat true on its peg. Nell still walks the lane at dusk, and the wood hums along beside her, quiet as a held breath, waiting for her to start the next line.
