Pell had counted the berries three times before the frost came, and each time the total came out different, which she took as a personal insult from the shrub. It grew against the south wall of Mrs Abernethy's allotment, a leggy thing with leaves like cabbage hands and clusters of violet beads that looked, to a squirrel with standards, almost too pretty to eat. Pell ate them anyway. Her tail curled behind her like a question mark while she worked, and she had a hollow in the apple tree twenty feet off and a whole winter to get through. Beauty was a poor sort of stock to lay down.

The trouble started with the man who came to dig the new plot. He wore boots the colour of wet bark and talked to the soil as though it owed him money. On the third morning he stopped by the shrub, pulled one twig down, and said something to himself about birds. Pell watched from the wall and decided he was no threat, only slow. She ran along the top of the fence, dropped onto the handle of his bucket, and took the fattest bunch while he was looking at the sky.

He did not shout. He laughed, very quietly, and left the twig where it hung. The next morning there was a saucer of peanuts on the wall, and beside it a single cluster cut short and tied to the stake with green string, so the fruit would hang at the height of her nose.

Pell took the peanuts. She left the berries until the very end of November, when they had shrivelled to purple raisins, and then she ate the last one hanging upside down from the highest twig, the way squirrels do when nobody is meant to see.
