Small infinity symbol on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind in a black strapped bikini, with her hair in a loose bun and her arm raised to her head. A small, thin black infinity symbol sits centrally on her upper back, between the shoulder blades. The plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin around it.

The seam runs under the galley floor on Halden Ring, a hairline where the corridor you have walked every shift for nineteen years bends round and meets the place it started. Nobody on the manifest knows why the ring was built that way. Your predecessor, Okonkwo-Reyes, used to say the engineers ran out of steel before they ran out of nerve. You kneel on the grating with the torch in your teeth and check the sealant, the way you have every morning since the rota gave it to you.

Behind the third panel you find a pencil mark nobody has scrubbed. It is a figure eight lying on its side, drawn with the care of someone who had time to spare, and beside it a date you recognise as the year your mother's ship docked. Under it, in smaller letters: keep the loop open for whoever comes round next. You hold the torch on the mark for a long while. The recyclers breathe in and out above you, the same breath they have taken since before you were born.

You have always thought the seam was a flaw. Now you think it is a kindness, a place where the station forgets it is finite and lets a person walk back to where they were. You take the pencil from your pocket, the stub you use for logging pressure readings, and draw a second loop beneath the first, tighter and a little crooked.

On the next shift you will find it there, or you will not, and either way the corridor will keep bending. You close the panel, tap it twice, and leave the light on for whoever comes round.
