Small arrow on a finger and star cluster
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a pale lavender shirt, showing a small black arrow tattoo on one finger, drawn in delicate single lines with a simple fletched head. Above the hand, a cluster of three or four small solid black stars sits on the skin, with one star noticeably smaller. The soft, blurred background in purple and blue keeps the focus on the ink and the silver ring worn beside it.

Dear Walt,

The night shift came up at six with the cage still ticking from the shaft, and Mam had the kettle on before the men had their boots off. Your old chair is still by the range. Nobody has sat in it since August, though Dad keeps moving it to the wall and then back again when he thinks no one is looking.
Mr Pryce has found the arrow you scratched into the lamp-room bench the week before you left. He wanted to know who made it, and I told him a boy who could never sit still, and he laughed and said that was half the men in the Dowson seam. He has let me keep the bench stool for the winter, so I sit on it when I do the sums for the Co-op book.
The stars are still over the pit heads on clear nights, that little cluster above Hartley Wood. Dad swore the smallest one was a bird until you told him it was a spark from the winding gear. I counted them last Thursday. Four, not three. I think one has crept closer to the others since you went, or I have stopped being able to tell which is which.
Write soon. Send me the name of the ship and the port, and I will draw a little arrow on the back of the envelope so the postman knows which way to aim.
Your loving sister, Nell
