Small arrow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A clenched fist is held towards the camera, with a small black arrow tattoo on the middle finger. The linework is simple and thin, with the arrow shown in solid black ink without shading. The background is softly blurred, showing a person in a lavender top, which keeps the focus on the hand and the tattoo.

He had shot an apple off the same boy's head for twenty-two years, and the boy was now a grown man selling insurance in Leeds. The new girl, Pru, held the apple between thumb and forefinger, and her hand shook only when she thought nobody could see. Hector told her to keep her eyes on the arrow and never on the fruit, the way his father had told him in a field very like this one.

For a moment nobody clapped. Then old Dennis, who had driven the lorries since the fifties, took off his cap and held it against his chest.

Hector pulled the arrow from the hay bale, still warm, and tucked it into the lining of his coat where it had ridden since the first show. Pru was already asking whether there would be a next season. He told her there would be as long as the field stayed dry and somebody remembered to sell tickets.
