Fine line heart on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is seen from behind with her hair pulled up, showing a small outlined heart with a curled loop at its upper left. The linework is thin and single-stroke with no shading, in black ink on the skin. The close crop has a soft, backlit background, with a fine silver chain and an ear cuff visible in the frame.

Dear Nell, Mr Ashworth has finally let me strip a movement on my own, though he hovers at my elbow like a gull over chips. The hairspring is the thing I cannot stop thinking about. It is finer than horsehair and coiled so tight it looks as if it is trying to remember something. He says never touch it with bare fingers, only the tweezers, and never let it kink, because a kink is a memory that will not come out.

Mrs Dunmore brought in her husband's pocket watch last Monday, stopped at twenty past four. Inside, the spring had folded back on itself in one neat loop, curling up at the top like the end of a violin scroll. Mr Ashworth wanted to post it to the man in London. I asked if I might try first. I spent three evenings under the lamp with the loupe, breathing through my nose so the coil would not flutter, and each time I thought I had it, my wrist would tremble and the loop would spring open again.
On Thursday it held. The balance swung, the escapement caught, and the second hand began to walk round the dial as if nothing had ever happened. Mrs Dunmore sat very still and listened to it for a long time. Then she tipped her head at the tiny curl I had not quite straightened. I had bent it back the way it had been, a little lopsided. She said, that's his, leave it. So I did. The watch is ticking in her handbag now, and my hands are steadier than they were. Your loving brother, Tom.
